Originally known as Breckinridge by the early settlers in 1840, it was first inhabited by Caddo and Comanche Indians. A railroad line was later built after the Civil War that ran from Dallas to Denison, making the town a railstop along the route. The name was then changed to Richardson in honor of the railroad contractor who was in charge of laying out the new lines.

Although the town is part of the Dallas Metropolitan Area, it has become a major employer in its own right in the transportation and recreation sectors. Several corporations have moved into the town, including Texas Instruments, the United States Environmental Protective Agency, Metro PCS, Cisco Systems and AT&T among many others. Several major expressways run through town, including Hwy 75 that runs through the center of town and into downtown Dallas as well as the LBJ Freeway(635) that runs around the outside of Dallas.

Parks & Recreation
